Campaign Description

We are thrilled that the majority of the D.C. Council is supporting the D.C. Fair Elections bill to empower voters, especially people of color and working families, who are underrepresented in our current system. With the end of the year insight, we’re counting on the council to get Fair Elections passed! Mobilize your members to send an email for their D.C. Councilmembers.

What is the DC Fair Elections legislation and what does it aim to accomplish?

This legislation aims to empower voters by providing limited public matching funds to qualified candidates. This voluntary program will strengthen local democracy, allow candidates and elected officials to spend more time with their constituents, and rein in the influence of big money in our elections.

We are one step closer to fair elections in D.C.! On Tuesday, January 9, 2018 the D.C. Council voted unanimously in support of the Fair Elections Act of 2017!

More and more people are clear in the District that fair elections are about a people powered-democracy for all. To get there it’s going to take all of us and the fight in D.C. is not over. There is a second vote in February and the Council will need to secure funding for fair elections once it passes.

Kudos to DC Fair Elections coalition and the many partners who have worked to move this campaign forward. To date, over 5000 petitions have been delivered, over 80 community leaders and 70 organizations are signed on in support, and we have 13 council members who have said YES to fair elections either by co-introducing, co-sponsoring, or voting to advance the bill.

"More than 60% of campaign contributions in recent cycles come from either non-District residents or corporations, while only 5% of campaign contributions come from D.C. residents giving $100 or less. D.C.’s donor class is older, whiter, wealthier, and more male than our population as a whole. More than 62% of Council and Mayoral donors are white, compared to 37% of D.C.’s population."

What's New

The Fair Elections bill passed! Now we need to ensure it is fully funded!

On Tuesday, Febraury 6, 2018 the DC Council passed the Fair Elections Act! This is an important step forward for D.C. residents. Public financing empowers residents to have a stronger voice in advocating for their kitchen table issues. The Fair Elections Act of 2017 gives small donors the ability to support local grassroots candidates who will represent their interests, not corporations and big money donors.

We celebrate this victory with the DC Coalition. Passage of the bill brings D.C. one step closer to fair elections, but we need to make sure the program is fully funded. We have sample social media posts to help celebrate today's huge win. We are also asking for our partners to share the petition to the DC Council and Mayor to fully fund the Fair Elections Program their members.

To learn more about the program and what you can do to bring Fair Elections to Washington D.C. Email David Sanchez (dsanchez@democracyinitiative.org) for more information.

Action:

There are concrete steps we can take in to push back against the tide of big money by strengthening the voices of, and increasing participation among, everyday Americans.

Call on the D.C. Council to pass and fully fund a strong D.C. Fair Elections Act.
