The Democracy Initiative (DI) calls the president’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program heartless and expresses deep concern for the lives of young people who have contributed to our economy and our country. The lack of compassion is in stark contrast to the core values of a nation built by immigrants and native people. Republicans and Democrats have supported DACA and recognizes the value its recipients bring to all of America. This is not the shining vision of democracy that unites Americans. The DI affirms the need for everyday people to come together to build a grassroots democracy movement to win, and make leadership change.
Ending DACA is yet another example of the continued assault on everyday people seeking to make a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities.”
Since the program began, nearly 1 million young people have been granted temporary relief from deportation. DACA recipients have been able to move out of the shadows to work openly, go to school, pay taxes, and contribute to the country they call home. Ending DACA tears young people away from their families and communities, and hurts our economy.
