Democracy Initiative Weekly Update 8.2.2017

Wednesday, August 2, 2017

Friday, July 28th marked the 100th anniversary of the Silent Protest Parade in New York city led by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other civil rights groups.  Read the whole statement here from Democracy Initiative Executive Director, Wendy Fields.

Our democracy works best when everyone participates. Some politicians want to shrink our voting power so that they won't be held accountable for policies that hurt workers, pollute our planet, or poison our children. The Pence/Kobach Commission is ignoring the real urgent threat to our democracy: decreased participation.

Thank you to our DI partners at SEIU for collecting and sharing stories from your members about why voting is important to them.

That's why our coalition is standing up to say "Don't Mess With Our Vote" to urge the Commission to focus on making sure every eligible voter is registered and every vote is counted.

SHARE A STORY -  We immediately want to identify activists who are speaking out and can share a short quote on why voting matters to them and connecting the dots to core issues such as the environment, criminal justice, and healthcare. Email Michelle Whittaker, mwhittaker@democracyinitiative.org, with a story.

Pence/Kobach Convening & Action Planning on August 18th

Join the Democracy Initiative, Rock the Vote, and the Hip Hop Caucus for a convening to plan for a collective action in response to the Pence/Kobach Commission's attempts to purge millions of eligible voters.   We will be meeting on August 18th from 2:00pm - 3:30pm at the Democracy Initiative office, 805 15th st NW, 8th floor.  Together, we will show a strong, unified power and tell the commissions #DontMessWithOurVote.

Automatic Voter Registration passed unanimously in both the Illinois House and Senate in May, yet Governor Rauner has not signed the bill into law!

There is a clear demand for automatic voter registration in Illinois. Automatic voter registration opens up participation to more voters! Mobilize your members in Illinois to pressure Governor Rauner to sign the bill into law. Find additional resources here.
