Democracy Initiative Weekly Update 03.06.19

Wednesday, March 6, 2019
Our highlighted issues, actions, and events in the democracy movement this week—please share widely.

This Friday, the House of Representatives is expected to pass H.R. 1, the “For the People Act,” which is the first comprehensive package of democracy reforms to be taken up in Congress, in decades.

We want to acknowledge the hard work of all our partners and allies, including our labor partners and the broader DFAD coalition. We also want to capture the power of this moment for the grass-roots field work that comes next, as we know that this historic moment was because of the culmination of the grassroots democracy reform victories and the momentum that is building across the country to demand transformative democracy change in favor of the people.

Here at the DI, we see this bill as the new floor and not the ceiling. Over the next year, we will take the debate to the streets and ask the grassroots what we need to make this possible and stronger. But this Friday is an opportunity to present a unified front behind democracy reforms that benefit and invigorate all of our organizations' fights.

Here are three easy ways to take action this week and to amplify the win this week:

  • Principal Quote and Picture: We are asking for a quote from your principal and a picture. We will turn the quotes into shareable social media graphics and content.
    1. Please send your principal quotes and picture to Jack Flynn at Here are a couple of examples:
      1. Karen Hobert Flynn, President of Common Cause: The For the People Act (H.R. 1) is an important first step to solidify the people’s voice in our democracy. For the first time, this bill brings together pragmatic solutions to strengthen our democracy in one bold, comprehensive package the American people are demanding. One of the best things about the For the People Act is that it is also by the people—the solutions in it modeled on solutions the people have already won locally and proven they work in cities and states coast to coast.
      2. Annie Leonard, Executive Director of Greenpeace. H.R.1 “For the People Act,” is a bold step toward ending the attacks on voting rights and the influence of big money in our politics. We have ten years to avert a climate catastrophe with ambitious energy policies such as the Green New Deal, including a just transition for workers and communities, that end the era of fossil fuels and put in place renewable energy solutions and H.R.1 helps us get there. It is time to put an end to the corruption and this bill sends a clear message that the voices of the people are strong and ready for a change.
  • Join Congressional leaders for an event on Friday morning at the Capitol steps: In advance of the vote on Friday, we're asking DC based partners to join us and our partners at Common Cause on the steps of the US Capitol building at 9:00am to deliver over 500,000 petition signatures in support of H.R. 1. Click here to RSVP. Non-DC based partners are welcome to amplify the hearing on social media.
  • Show up on social media: Help to amplify the historic victory on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Here is sample content from our partners at Common Cause and ReThink Media.

We will be driving and tracking social media activity this week and next. Please share your tweets in a direct message to our twitter account (@unite4democracy) and we’ll retweet you. We’re asking all of our partners to send out or retweet at least 3 tweets in support of H.R. 1 on Friday!

This moment is a direct result of the grassroots demand and political momentum built over the past several years in the field, culminating in a sweeping series of state-level democracy reform wins this past Fall. This moment is historic. And this victory belongs to every American, every organizer, and every coalition member that fought for it.

Wednesday, March 13, 3PM EST / NOON PST

Join us on the next DI Mobilizing call on Wednesday, March 13 at 3pm EST.

Next week we will host a strategy session during our mobilizing meeting for identifying and amplifying key state democracy reform campaigns. We're inviting state partners to provide overviews of ongoing campaigns on the voting rights front, as well as sharing a larger list of current campaigns across the country.

In addition, we expect to debrief on the anticipated vote in the House of Representatives on H.R. 1—the “For the People Act”— and identify next steps to build further momentum in the Senate and in the states.
