Democracy Initiative Mourns the Passsing of AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka

The following statement is from Charly Carter, executive director of the Democracy Initiative.

"The member organizations of the Democracy Initiative join our allies and colleagues today as we mourn the death of Rich Trumka, a great American labor leader. As president of the United Mine Workers and then the AFL-CIO, he was a tireless, innovative and forceful advocate for workers and families. We at the Democracy Initiative, where the AFL-CIO is a core partner, especially appreciate Rich Trumka's vision of the labor movement as an essential voice for democracy, racial justice and social progress. His work over many decades touched countless lives, inside and outside the labor movement, in the U.S. and abroad.

"Our hearts are with Rich's family and his many friends today. Together we will do all we can to honor his legacy: Fairness and dignity on the job, fairness and democracy in our communities."

The Democracy Initiative is a coalition of 75 organizations with a collective 45 million members fighting for workers, civil rights, social justice and the environment. DI partner organizations are united in their commitment to realizing the promise of American democracy where all people have an equal seat at the governance table.
